Getting auto insurance in Ontario is very different for those who live in the densely populated communities of the GTA compared with more northern and rural communities. Some factors Ontario drivers deal with are bumper-to-bumper traffic, dangerous winter storms, theft in urban centres, and long distances between services in rural communities.

Who Provides Car Insurance Quotes in Ontario?

There are four types of car insurance providers in Ontario that offer quotes: insurance brokers, agents, aggregators and direct writers.

Insurance Brokers

Independent insurance brokers compare multiple insurers on a shopper’s behalf to find the best rates. Their broad knowledge of the current Ontario market also helps them identify companies offering the best deals and answer any questions you may have.

It’s important to compare quotes on the basis of equal coverage, limits and deductibles. Insurers pay brokers a commission for the policies they sell. Brokers compare products from insurers they represent, but they do not necessarily have access to every insurance company in Ontario.

Direct Writers

Direct writers are insurance companies that sell their own policies directly to you, either via the Internet or over the telephone. They are not necessarily cheaper than insurance brokers or agents. Be sure to compare the whole policy.

Insurance Agents

Agents usually represent one insurance company, but they can tell you about that company’s products, requirements for coverage, and possible discounts. It may still be beneficial to get some additional quotes because the agent cannot compare the entire market.

Also, insurance agents are able to make insurance sales on their own. That means you can buy insurance from them right away.

Insurance Aggregators

Remember that the lowest-priced insurance may not necessarily be the best. Make sure to consider the limits, deductibles, exclusions and the customer service offered by participating insurance companies. Websites like MyChoice can help by showing insurance quotes from a number of providers so you can compare and contrast them all in one place.

Even better, many of these aggregators are available online and cost nothing to access, so you don’t have to pay a cent or go anywhere to find out how much your insurance will cost.

What Makes Up the Ontario Premium?

The majority of your Ontario premium is split almost evenly between protecting the car ($1,086.99) and funding mandatory coverages in Ontario ($1,037.80).

This means there isn’t much wiggle room when it comes to reducing expenses for mandatory coverage. If you want to reduce your insurance bill, you’ll likely need to alter your collision or comprehensive policies, or increase your deductibles. While these decisions will bring down the cost of your policy, you’ll also end up assuming more risk in the event that your vehicle is stolen, suffers damage or gets into an accident.

How Your Car Insurance Quotes Are Calculated in Ontario

The main thing you need to understand is that your car insurance rate is determined by how much of a risk you are. People who are more likely to get into an accident will pay more for car insurance than people who are less likely to be in an accident.

Ontario car insurance quotes can vary widely. Seven factors may affect the estimate you receive:

Age, Gender, and Marital Status

Some insurers may also use other approved rating factors, including age, years licensed, driving record, location, how much you drive each year and, in some cases, sex or marital status. You don’t automatically get a lower premium at 25 or a higher one at 65. How each of those factors affects your price depends on your insurer’s approved rating model, as well as all your other info.

Location

If you live in the city, your insurance rates may be higher. There’s a higher risk of theft and car accidents in urban areas.

Car Make and Model

Because expensive cars are more expensive to repair or replace, your insurance premiums will typically be higher than those of a more common vehicle. If you own an expensive car and would like to reduce your insurance premiums, consider installing security features such as anti-theft devices.

Driving History

Drivers who drive carefully are typically offered lower insurance rates since they are less likely to be in accidents. Conversely, drivers who have been in multiple accidents may be charged higher rates because they are more likely to get into future accidents.

Driving Activity

The more you drive, the more likely you are to be in a car accident; consequently, the number of kilometres driven is one of the key determining factors in Ontario auto insurance rates.

Insurance Coverage Chosen

The types of coverage you select impact your premium since they determine how much you’re protected for. So, if you opt for more coverage, you’ll pay higher rates.

Policy Discounts

Discounts can help make auto insurance more affordable. Common options include bundling home and auto policies or asking whether your workplace or organization has a group rate.

Car Insurance Costs in Ontario by Age

Age is also a big factor in determining auto insurance rates for Ontario drivers. Drivers aged 18–20 pay a median annual rate of $5,576, more than double the $2,345 median for drivers aged 35–44. By age 65+, the median falls to $1,714 per year.

Options that may help young drivers save include an accredited driving course, appropriate occasional-driver status on a policy, or participation in a usage-based insurance program.

AgeMedian Annual

18-20$5,576

How Driving History Changes Ontario Car Insurance Rates

For an Ontario driver, one at-fault accident on their record increases the median premium from $2,345 to $2,969 ($624 per year). A minor speeding ticket correlates to a median premium of $3,244 ($899 above the clean-record figure).

Do note, however, that it’s more difficult to compare rates for more serious offences, since fewer insurance companies will provide quotes for those types of drivers, and some may have to turn to the high-risk market.

How Can You Get Cheap Car Insurance in Ontario?

You can obtain low cost car insurance in Ontario if you know how to locate the best deals. Consider these helpful suggestions:

Compare Rates Between Insurers

Ontario insurers use different rating models, so the same driver can receive different prices. Compare quotes using the same limits, deductibles, endorsements, and driver information so the comparison is meaningful.

Take Bundled Policies

Bundling home or tenant insurance with auto insurance may qualify you for a discount. Check the combined cost and coverage, because two separate policies can still be the better option in some cases.

Ask For A Higher Deductible

A higher deductible may lower your premium, but it also increases what you pay after an eligible claim. Choose an amount you could comfortably cover without creating financial strain.

Request Group Discounts

Some insurers offer group rates through eligible employers, professional associations, unions, or alumni groups. Ask which memberships qualify and compare the final price with regular-market quotes.

Pay Annual Premiums

Some insurers charge instalment or financing fees for monthly payments, while others structure payment plans differently. Ask for the total annual cost under each option before deciding how to pay.

Drive Safely

A driving violation on your record will considerably increase your insurance rates. However, this also means you’ll get lower auto insurance rates if you have no offences on record.

Consider Taking Usage-Based Insurance

Usage-based insurance uses telematics data such as mileage, braking, acceleration, speed, and time of travel. It may provide a discount, but the savings, data collected, and effect of driving behaviour vary by insurer, so review the program terms first.

Take Driving Courses

New drivers who complete a government-approved beginner driver education course may qualify for a discount with some insurers. Confirm the course is recognized and ask the insurer how it affects the quote.

Choose the Coverage You Need

Collision and comprehensive coverage are optional forms of vehicle protection, while several other coverages are required. Before removing optional protection, consider the vehicle’s value, any lease or loan conditions, and whether you could afford to repair or replace it yourself.

Buy Affordable Cars

The exact make, model, model year, repair cost, theft rate, safety features, and claims history can all affect the premium. Check an insurance quote before buying a vehicle instead of assuming that a lower purchase price will always mean cheaper insurance.

Other Factors That Affect Car Insurance Prices in Ontario

There are a number of other factors which can affect your car insurance rates in Ontario. We’ve mentioned some of them already, but here are some other things to consider when it comes to your Ontario car insurance premiums:

Read More: How Insurance Fraud Adds to Ontario Auto Insurance Costs

Vehicle Model Accident Rates

Certain vehicles tend to be more likely to get into accidents than others. This means that even with a clean driving record, your insurance costs may go up if you own a vehicle known for its history of accidents.

Vehicle Age

That said, a vehicle’s age isn’t necessarily a determining factor in whether your insurance costs more or less. Insurers also factor in the car’s value, repair costs, safety features, theft record and claims history, as well as whether you carry collision or comprehensive coverage. The cost will vary accordingly.

Vehicle Repair Costs

If it’s difficult to fix a car, it’s more expensive to insure. Don’t be surprised if your insurance is costly for a luxury vehicle or foreign car without a large dealership or service centre footprint in Canada.

Vehicle Primary Usage and Annual Mileage

The amount of time spent driving in a car will depend on how you use it. Car usage also plays a role in insurance rates, as the more you use your car, the higher your rate tends to be.

For example, you’ll pay more for car insurance if you’re using it to drive for Uber than if you mostly use it for weekend drives around town.

One of the best ways to determine how often someone uses their vehicle is by its annual mileage. If your vehicle has low annual mileage, insurance companies may consider it less risky and offer lower premiums.

Local Crime Rates

Living in an area where cars are more likely to be stolen or vandalized may increase auto insurance costs. Areas with more theft and vandalism may be associated with higher rates for residents.

Past Insurance Claims

However, some claims could result in a change to your rate or coverage. It depends on the at-fault determination, type of claim, whether you have certain protections such as accident forgiveness, and your specific insurer’s policy. A not-at-fault claim will not automatically increase every insurance policy in Ontario.

Loyalty Bonuses

There are many insurance companies that give you a discount if you’ve been with them for a while. If you have been with one company for a few years, make sure you request a lower rate or a discount at your renewal.

Congestion, Winter Weather, and Long-Distance Ontario Travel

Risks in Ontario range from heavy GTA congestion to long stretches of remote northern roadways. Snow squalls, freezing rain, wildlife, vulnerability to theft, road work and isolation vary significantly depending on location. A provincial average doesn’t substitute for regional considerations; know your route before you choose a policy, and use Ontario 511 to stay up to date on current road conditions.

About Dataset

More than 50,000 real-world auto insurance quotes were analyzed by MyChoice’s research and data science team. Quotes were collected through MyChoice.ca in Canada. Results are presented as aggregated data, and personal information is not included.

How We Calculate City Rates

Rates for each city are calculated using the dataset median of all the quotes collected under a standard profile. Median is used instead of average to minimize the effect of extremely low or high results.

Standard Profile

Unless otherwise indicated, our standard driver is assumed to be between ages 35-44, not married, insuring a single vehicle with a minimum of 5 years of driving experience, continuous insurance history, and a spotless driving record. Vehicles are fully protected with a $1,000 deductible. Liability is $1 million. Annual driving distance is assumed to be about 15,000 kilometres.

Driving Record Scenarios

Results are calculated for a number of different driving records, including a clean driving record, one at-fault accident, a speeding ticket, a cancelled insurance policy due to non-payment, lost licence for alcohol-related offence, impaired and stunt driving convictions.

Vehicle Mileage

Unless otherwise noted, all rates assume vehicles are driven 15,000 kilometres/year.

Vehicle Models Included

Rates for each city include a range of vehicles, which is the same across all cities, including Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Elantra, Mazda CX-5, Ford Escape.

Driver Age Groups

Rates for each city include a range of ages from 18 to 65+. Please note that each province may handle driver’s age differently when calculating premiums.

Data Limitations

Rates displayed represent premiums quoted by MyChoice and participating insurance companies during the research period. Data does not include premiums from all insurance companies in Canada. Fewer insurance companies provide quotes in the case of high-risk scenarios, such as impaired driving convictions, and high-risk categories, and premiums within these categories are more volatile than others.

I recently tried MyChoice to look at homeowner insurance options and the process was very fast. The website only required a few basic details about the property to get started. After entering the address, a lot of the home information was already filled in automatically, so I just had to confirm that everything was correct before continuing. Within a short time, the site displayed a few insurance quotes from different providers. Having several prices shown together made it easy to see the differences and decide which option seemed the most reasonable. I also liked that MyChoice included a bit of background information about the brokers connected to each quote. This gave me a better idea of who the provider was and added some helpful context before choosing anything. Overall, MyChoice is a convenient way to check insurance rates if you're exploring your options. It’s simple to use, quick, and helpful for comparing offers without having to search multiple websites.
