Kingston drivers deal with very different traffic depending on where they are in the city. Downtown and the university area bring more pedestrians, cyclists and short trips, while Highway 401 connects drivers to longer trips across Eastern Ontario.

This page looks at what Kingston drivers pay for car insurance, how rates vary by postal area, age, and driving record, and where most of the premium goes.

Quick Guide to Kingston Car Insurance Costs

Based on our internal data, Kingston’s median annual auto insurance quote is $1,963, or $164 a month. That is 16.3% below the Ontario median.

How Kingston Premiums Vary by Postal Code

There is only a $97 annual difference between the highest and lowest Kingston postal areas shown, from $1,894 in K7L to $1,991 in K7K.

That is a fairly small spread. If two Kingston drivers are paying very different amounts, their vehicle, driving record, coverage or insurer is likely doing more to explain the difference than the postal area alone.

Accident Rates by Postal Code in Kingston

Not all parts of Kingston have the same accident risk, and your postal code is one of the main factors insurers use to set your premium. The map below shows the percentage of drivers who have been in an accident across Kingston’s postal codes, based on over 50,000 quotes analyzed by MyChoice.

  • K7P — Cataraqui: 13.8% of drivers have an accident on record
  • K7L — Queen’s University Area: 13.7%
  • K7K — Downtown Kingston: 13.7%

Areas with the lowest accident rates:

  • K7N — Collins Bay / Amherstview: 9.1%
  • K7M — Kingston West: 10.2%

Drivers in Cataraqui (K7P) are over 1.5x more likely to have an accident on their record than drivers in Collins Bay (K7N).

Highway 401, Student Traffic, and Winter Travel in Kingston

Kingston drivers manage Highway 401 through traffic alongside busy university, hospital, and downtown areas. Pedestrians, cyclists, construction, snow, and lake-influenced weather create different risks within a small area. Drivers should slow in high-foot-traffic zones and check conditions across eastern Ontario before longer highway trips.

Breaking Down a Kingston Auto Insurance Premium

More than half of Kingston’s $1,963 premium goes toward vehicle damage protection, which accounts for $1,034.89.

For someone driving an older vehicle, this makes collision, comprehensive and deductibles worth reviewing at renewal. Just make sure the savings are worth the amount you would have to pay yourself if the car were damaged or stolen.

How Age Affects Car Insurance Premiums in Kingston

Drivers aged 18–20 pay $4,345, more than twice the $1,963 median for drivers aged 35–44. By ages 25–34, the median has already fallen to $2,586.

Kingston has a large student population, so younger drivers should pay particular attention to how they are listed on the policy. A student who takes a car to Kingston and uses it regularly may need to be treated differently from someone who only drives the family car occasionally when home.

Kingston Car Insurance Costs by Driving Record

A speeding ticket and an at-fault accident are priced surprisingly close in this sample. The speeding-ticket median is $2,490, while one at-fault accident comes in at $2,526.

Both are roughly 27–29% above the clean-record premium. That does not mean insurers always treat tickets and accidents the same way, but it does show why it is worth getting new quotes after your record changes.

The Most Common Questions About Car Insurance in Kingston

Why should you compare car insurance rates in Kingston?

You should compare car insurance rates in Kingston because they are constantly changing. No two Ontario insurance providers have the same rates, so picking the right plan can save you hundreds of dollars in the long run.

What information do you need for an auto insurance quote in Kingston?

The information you need to provide for an auto insurance quote in Kingston includes your driver’s licence, driving record, and vehicle type. Depending on your insurance provider, you may need to provide additional information as requested.

Can I use my Kingston car insurance to drive in the United States?

Yes, you can use your Kingston car insurance to drive in the United States. However, most insurers recommend getting additional emergency coverage or bringing cash.

What’s the Best Way to Choose a Car Insurance Company in Kingston?

Start by comparing several insurers using the same coverage, deductibles and mileage. Kingston’s median premium is already relatively low compared with many Ontario cities, so the cheapest option may come down more to how each insurer prices your vehicle and driving record than to the city itself.

If you are a student or renter, also compare the total cost of bundling tenant and auto insurance.

Methodology

About Dataset

We analyzed over 50,000 real auto insurance quotes collected through MyChoice.ca in Canada across a range of ages, driving records, vehicles, and locations. All personal information was excluded, and results were reported only in aggregate.

How We Calculate City Rates

We report the median annual quoted premium, which is less affected than an average by a small number of unusually high or low quotes.

Standard Profile

Our standard profile is a single driver aged 35–44 with one vehicle, at least five years of driving experience, continuous insurance coverage, and a clean driving record. The profile carries standard full coverage with $1,000 deductibles and $1 million in liability coverage.

Driving Record Scenarios

We examined how quoted premiums change across a clean record, one at-fault accident, one speeding ticket, an insurance cancellation for non-payment, a licence suspension for an alcohol-related offence, an impaired-driving conviction, and a stunt-driving conviction.

Vehicle Mileage

We analyzed drivers who travel approximately 15,000 kilometres per year.

Vehicle Models Included

We used the same representative mix of commonly driven vehicles in every city, including models such as the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Elantra, Mazda CX-5, and Ford Escape.

Driver Age Groups

Profiles from age 18 to 65+ were considered, with ages 35–44 used for the standard profile. Age-related rating rules may vary by province.

Data Limitations

The figures reflect quotes available through MyChoice and participating insurance providers during the study period. They do not represent every insurer or the premium paid by every driver. Serious convictions, such as impaired driving, are quoted by fewer insurers and often fall within the high-risk market. As a result, those figures are more volatile.

I recently tried MyChoice to look at homeowner insurance options and the process was very fast. The website only required a few basic details about the property to get started. After entering the address, a lot of the home information was already filled in automatically, so I just had to confirm that everything was correct before continuing. Within a short time, the site displayed a few insurance quotes from different providers. Having several prices shown together made it easy to see the differences and decide which option seemed the most reasonable. I also liked that MyChoice included a bit of background information about the brokers connected to each quote. This gave me a better idea of who the provider was and added some helpful context before choosing anything. Overall, MyChoice is a convenient way to check insurance rates if you're exploring your options. It’s simple to use, quick, and helpful for comparing offers without having to search multiple websites.
