Preventing youth from smoking is a concern that everyone shares, including MyChoice.ca. Effective cessation programmes are a common goal. Smoking is one of several problem activities among youth – alcohol and marijuana use being some of the others – and dealing with these issues in isolation may not be the best approach. We take issue with tactics and strategies that appear designed mainly to satisfy the opinions and ideologies of one group, regardless of their effectiveness and consequences. For example, offensive advertising such as the Ontario "stupid.ca" television campaign that stated that smokers “smell like dog crap,” clearly would not be tolerated if directed at any other group in society.
• Advocating for the development of effective programmes aimed at youth through inclusive and wide-reaching strategies that provide parents with the right kind of information, accurately inform educators, engage the private sector, and encourages the participation of all players
• Endorsing better research and more accurate and unbiased assessment of research into the reasons why young people take up smoking – and other problem behaviours such as alcohol and drug use - in order to design more effective strategies
• Opposing the use of offensive, divisive strategies
